A considered evolution of a 1970s Mid-Century home
A Mid-Century Modern home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, thoughtfully reimagined for a young and growing family. While its original character was part of what drew the owners to the home, a series of enclosed spaces restricted natural light, outlook and connection, leaving little room for the family to gather and entertain with ease.
Guided in part by the home’s original building plans, unnecessary walls were removed to create greater flow between the kitchen and living spaces. Layers of flooring accumulated over the years were stripped back to reveal the original timber floors beneath, while existing brickwork and architectural details were carefully retained.
Natural oak joinery, muted green mosaic tiles and a restrained palette of lighter surfaces bring a contemporary warmth to the original architecture. Influenced by the owners’ Japanese heritage, alongside coastal and Mid-Century references, the design is calm and considered - respecting the history of the home while creating space for the way this family lives today.
