A considered approach, explained.
Answers to the questions we’re most often asked, so you can move forward with clarity and ease.

Howard Lane Designs specialises in residential interior design, with a focus on full-home renovations, kitchen and bathroom design, and considered upgrades to existing homes. Our work is primarily based across Sydney’s Northern Beaches and North Shore, with select projects undertaken throughout wider Sydney and interstate.
We are particularly experienced in projects where clarity, functionality, and longevity are key, often for busy families and professionals seeking well-resolved spaces rather than trend-led outcomes. Each project is intentionally unique, shaped by how our clients live and what they value, resulting in interiors that feel personal, purposeful, and distinctly their own.
Our process is collaborative and considered. You’ll be involved at key stages, from concept development through to material selections, with decisions guided by clarity and expertise to ensure the final outcome feels authentically yours.
Many of our clients are busy professionals who value clarity over choice overload. Rather than have you spend hours in showrooms, we thoughtfully curate and present a refined range of options aligned with your brief, budget and aesthetic, allowing you to engage meaningfully without feeling overwhelmed.
Engaging an interior designer as early as possible is one of the most effective ways to protect your investment and avoid costly changes later. Ideally, a designer is brought on well before construction begins, allowing sufficient time for layout planning, functional considerations, budget alignment and material selections to be resolved cohesively rather than under pressure.
Early engagement also allows for realistic lead times. Experienced trades and consultants are often booked well in advance, and our projects typically commence a few months after engagement. Beginning the conversation early helps ensure your project can be thoughtfully developed, secured within our calendar, and set up for a smoother, more efficient process overall.
Yes. A clear understanding of budget is fundamental to a successful project.
Rather than treating budget as a limitation, we use it as a design tool, helping prioritise where investment will have the greatest impact and where restraint is appropriate. Our role is to guide decisions thoughtfully, balancing aspiration with realism to achieve a well-resolved result that aligns with both your vision and your financial parameters.
Yes, we provide both 3D visualisations and renders as an integral part of our design process. Visualisations are used throughout the project to explore layout, proportion and material combinations, allowing you to test ideas, compare options and gain clarity as the design evolves, rather than as a one-off or limited add-on.
Renders are typically produced once key decisions are resolved, offering a more detailed, photo-realistic representation of the finished space. Using both tools supports confident decision-making and gives clients clarity and assurance around how their finished home will look and feel, well before construction has even commenced.
The builder is responsible for managing the site and coordinating trades. This sits within the scope of a builder’s licence and insurance, which covers the legal and regulatory requirements of construction work.
Our role is design management. We work closely with the builder throughout the build to ensure the design intent is clearly understood and carried through, providing guidance and clarification as required. This collaborative approach supports a smooth build process while ensuring the finished result reflects the design we’ve developed together.
Our interior design fees are structured as a flat fee, tailored to the specific scope and requirements of each project. This approach provides clarity from the outset and removes the uncertainty that can come with open-ended hourly billing.
Fees reflect the scale, complexity and level of involvement required, recognising that every home and brief is unique. Where applicable, we pass on trade pricing in full for furniture, finishes and fixtures, which can result in meaningful savings over the course of a project. For additional transparency, we also offer a downloadable Investment Guide to support clients in the early planning stages.
Yes, we work with a trusted network of builders and trades and can provide recommendations where helpful. We’re also equally comfortable collaborating with a builder or trade team you’ve already selected.
Our role is to work alongside the broader project team to ensure the design intent is clearly understood and carried through, regardless of who is delivering the build. What matters most is a shared commitment to quality, clear communication and a considered approach throughout the process.
Howard Lane Designs is the right fit if you value a considered, collaborative process and appreciate clear, confident guidance without pressure. Our studio works best with clients who are open to thoughtful dialogue and trust in a calm, well-paced approach to design.
Designing a home is deeply personal, and over the course of a project we take the time to understand how you live, what matters to your family, and what your home needs to support day to day. We’re here to guide, educate and support with care and intention, creating spaces that are both beautiful and genuinely functional. If this approach resonates, we’d love you to submit a project enquiry to begin the conversation.
The first step is to submit a project enquiry. This gives us an overview of your project, needs and anticipated timeline, allowing us to understand how we can best support you.
From there, we’ll be in touch to arrange an introductory call. This is an opportunity to discuss your project in more detail, answer initial questions and ensure our services are well aligned before moving forward to a design consultation.
Tamiko was a pleasure to deal with and put structure and certainty around the whole process.
